I have long been a pet owner and lover.  I have cared for many fuzzy and slimy animals.  I thought I had an expert opinion.

Truly, I don't.  I surprised myself by how much I need to know when I took an online no-credit veterinary assistant course at the local community college.  I took it because of my dream to someday be a veterinarian.  However, it provided me with something else: a better knowledge to take care of pets.

Really, the contents of the course should be known to everyone owning or planning to own a pet.  Our staff has realized the ignorance of pet owners (including themselves) and are now finding ways to be sure pets everywhere receive the care they need.

The best bet on making sure you have healthy pets is to look at your resources.  Ask your vet if they have any brochures or information packets on your breed/species.  Get the general idea of what you should be aware of as a pet owner by browsing this site.  Books can also be very useful.

Some useful references on general pet care can be found at the following websites:

The Humane Society of the United states

AVMA

ASPCA
